Getting more knowledge and become a Certified IT technician
Feb 20th, 2007 by MuZumbu
For a couple of months now I’ve been coping with the idea of getting of making myself a certified IT technician. There are a lot of certifications available out there that could be of interest to me or to you. The thing is which one to choose from. Upon surfing the net and doing a little research on the subject I found out there are a lot of certifications you could get. Most of them are really interesting and could be of some use to me … but not at my current place of work, since , well , these things will not help my career too much … but there is always that personal satisfaction that you are a certified tehnician / associate / expert in some field.
So, I’ve decided to list only a few of them … those that could be beneficial for me.
First of all , it the all known Cisco Certified Network Associate ( CCNA ). It has a nice ring to it right ? Wrong , this is indeed a usefull thing to have only if you work in a Cisco environment or intend to do so in the near future. This will indeed become handy if you do, since it places the basics on working with basic Cisco routers. If you do work in such an environment, than you should consider taking the exams. You will probably benefit from your new gained knowledge. Perhaps even consider going further ahead and taking the next levels. ( CCNP, Security )
The second one … something that is becoming more fashionable nowadays … RedHat Linux Certifications. Yes, the all mighty linux box. From my perspective this is something that would definetly benefit me , but since this is still a pretty rare exam it can only be taken in a few locations in Romania and the costs tend to be higher that usual.
And last, but not least … the Microsoft Exams. Microsoft has decided that it’s best to have lots and lots of possible certifications to take. So, they created a test for every possible task / job that could use their products. So if you want to become somehow a sort of a small guru in Microsoft technology you will probably have to take at least 10-15 tests. But, my opinion is that these test are the most important tests that I would like to take since they would really help me do my job better.
But, at the end it comes to a strange decision … taking the exams / certifications for the curriculum , not just for the knowledge. Since most of the HR Managers in Romania are more impressed with the list of certifications that with the knowledge the person could have. For me , I’ve decided to learn the practical side of things since the internet if full of free resources so you could become a better IT worker.
Hope you liked my little article.
