The Need For Backup
Oct 30th, 2007 by MuZumbu
Yesterday, while running the backup procedures on one server that I maintain I realized how important this has become. It has saved my butt countless times and will probably continue to do so.
Today I was wondering the internet, yet again, trying to discover some useful backup scripts to use on my linux box. I found something even more interesting. I found a site called The History of Backup. After reading it , I realized how little on this subject I know. It’s a well structured site, full of useful informations, it’s easy to read and has also some great links to other resources on the subject. It is indeed a site about The History of Backup. It starts from the beginning, I mean , Punch Card Backups as a Reference Point in Backup History, Magnetic Tapes, Floppy Disk, Hard Drives and Disk-to-Disk Backup, Optical CD/DVD Media Backup, Flash Drives, Blu-ray Disks and HD-DVD and takes you to the latest state of the art backup solution using Network and On-line Backup Solutions. Using different case studies with graphs to show the evolution, the author also predicts future trends and solutions.
I particularly like the graph with the evolution of the backup :

A great resource, a must have bookmark. I just hope that the author will keep it updated as more informations and technologies become available.
